04/15/11 Our Facebook page is now live! We plan on posting helpful information for pet owners, news about specials and events in the area, and occasionally something that's just for fun. If you see a great video or helpful article, pass it along!
03/23/11 Yes, it happens to us, too....Dr. Dornhoff recently noticed that her pets' water dish needed refilling more often, and their litterboxes needed emptying more, too. Monday, after spotting Mary in the box more often than usual, she brought her in for bloodwork and a urinalysis, and confirmed that Mary has just become diabetic. The good news is that it was caught early, and with prompt treatment, using a prescription diet and a special insulin, there's a good chance for Mary to go into remission. Even if she doesn't, this is the second time one of Dr. D.'s cats has become diabetic -- the first was Sara Bella, shortly after Dr. D. came to Country Court -- so she knows what she's in for. Diabetic cats can still live long, happy lives with the right care, and we're hoping to have Mary making trouble and being "quite contrary" for many years to come!
02/08/11 Pet Dental Health Month is underway! To celebrate, we are offering a 10% discount on all dental procedures, from mild dental disease needing only cleaning and Oravet sealant, to serious disease requiring deep root planing and multiple tooth extractions. We are also strongly encouraging clients whose pets' teeth are still healthy to make a commitment to teach their pets to accept daily tooth-brushing. It can make a world of difference in your pet's mouth! Don't try to brush their whole mouth the first time out -- first make a game of getting them to sit still while you hold their head still and look at their mouth, then while you touch their lips, then gently lifting the lip a little, then further, etc. until eventually you can get a good look at the very back teeth. Then gently rub a small amount of enzymatic pet toothpaste onto a tooth or two, and let them discover that it comes in flavors such as beef and poultry! By gradually increasing what's expected each day, you can train your pet to enjoy toothbrushing!
02/02/11 Due to the blizzard, we are operating on limited staff. Dr. Block stayed overnight to ensure someone would be here to take care of pets who are boarding or hospitalized. A good thing, too -- even with four wheel drive, she was unable to get back home this morning, although she helped two different people who were stuck in drifts, and then was helped by one of them in return when she got stuck herself. We will likely be closing early today, but plan to resume normal business hours tomorrow (Thursday). Please be careful when shoveling, and make sure pets don't stay out too long as they can get frostbite just like people! 01/07/11 Dr. Dornhoff has the opportunity to attend a behavior seminar later this month. It will be on three consecutive Sundays, and go into considerable depth regarding learning and behavior modification in all species. She looks forward to bringing what she learns into practice helping clients with tricky and frustrating behavior problems.
01/01/11 Happy New Year! May 2011 see the economy rebound. Peace and prosperity to all our clients, and many happy walks, wags, purrs, and cuddles for our patients!
12/25/10 Merry Christmas! :-)

Our online tour of Country Court Animal Hospital is now available! It's in the menu to the left under "About Us" and we'd really appreciate it if you let us know if you find any problems -- broken links, text overlapping with pictures, etc. -- so that we can try to fix it. Please include what web browser you're using (e.g. Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari) and if you know what operating system you're using (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OS 10, RedHat Linux, etc) that would be a big help, too!
12/16/10 A quick reminder to everyone to keep pets safe from the hazards of the holidays. Make sure decorations and presents are out of reach; cats especially should be kept away from ribbons and tinsel. Chocolates, sugar-free foods with xylitol, macadamia nuts, and anything too rich or high-fat should be kept out of reach of pets, to avoid last-minute trips to the vet (or many many trips outside....). We usually see several dogs every year who got into a box of chocolate candy, and one year Dr. Block had to remove tinsel from a cat's intestines surgically! Make sure your pets have been taught how to act around friends, family and guests, and make sure the humans know the rules too. Take the time to teach small children how to act around pets and it can serve them well for a lifetime!
12/05/10 At our annual staff Christmas party, Dr. Block always delights in finding new and interesting things for us to do. We've gone to Medieval Times, made Christmas wreaths, and seen the musical CATS together. This year, almost the entire staff got to take a CPR course together and become certified by the Red Cross! It was a lot of fun, and as usual Jean made sure we were very well-fed. Learning CPR is one of those things that a lot of people would like to do "someday" and it was wonderful to have that "someday" arrive!
10/29/10 The end of this month marks eleven years since Dr. Dornhoff joined Dr. Block at Country Court. She has greatly enjoyed becoming a part of the Country Court family and getting to know so many patients and clients, and looks forward to many more years of working together!
10/16/10 Dr. Lewis just couldn't be without a Papillon -- she's just adopted Wilbur through a Papillon rescue group! Wilbur is about six months old, one of a litter of puppies born at their foster home after their mom was rescued from a puppy mill. Wilbur is still a little shy but adapting quickly to his new home.
8/25/10 Very sad news. Millie, Dr. Lewis's Papillon puppy, passed away on August 9. She had suffered from a variety of medical problems, which is how she came to live with Dr. Lewis. We will all miss her terribly.
On a more cheerful note, Inga, one of our kennel attendants, is leaving us to attend college. She plans to go on to medical school and specialize in Ob/Gyn. We wish her the best of luck!
7/24/2010 We finally have the doctors' pictures and biographies uploaded. You can check them out on "Our Doctors" under the "About Us" tab. I think the pictures came out very well! We're working on getting pictures of the rest of the staff, although some are more camera-shy than others. Also in the works is a virtual tour of the hospital, and a page about some of the equipment we have.
In other news, we now have Comfortis, the flea pill! Clients have been asking for a pill to kill fleas for years. Comfortis kills fleas for a month, but it doesn't work for very long against ticks, so if your dog walks in or near woods, tall grass, or brush (like along the power lines or near the Forest Preserve), Frontline or Advantix is still a better choice. Be sure to ask about your options for flea and tick control!
I was walking Pippin in PetSmart the other day, and noticed their display of Frontline. Their boxes only had three doses, and the price per dose was a lot higher than ours! Even I sometimes fall into the assumption that things would be cheaper to get somewhere else, but whenever we compare prices, we seem to do pretty well. Yay!
We have a lot of things in the works for improving our online presence, please bear with us, and if you have any ideas or suggestions, send us an email!
